Mabel Artes Memories

My sympathy to the family of Mabel Artes – Bunny Bedell and Fred and Ruth Artes. Of course you can’t say Fred and Ruth with out thinking of Skyler and Kelsey and now Davin, Leif and baby brother Dahl!  And, as exciting, Kelsey is marrying Troy in September – oh how families grow!

Mabel and Irv were great friends. Every evening they were here, William and I would carry our drinks over to their front porch so we could converse and William and Irv would solve the world’s problems. Mabel and I would just smile and quietly listen to our two problem solvers, not daring to try to get a word in edgewise, you don’t do that when a lawyer and insurance man are hard at work. After we ate our suppers Irv and William would carry their conversation to the dock where they would “fish” until 8:00 when it was time for Mabel’s boat ride. Irv and Mabel would come back shortly after dark having enjoyed the Okoboji Sunset and quiet conversation.

One of my all-time favorite memories of the beach is taken by Bruce Bedell in the picture above – the wine tasting party!!! What fun we all had. I’ll never forget our faces and the laughing when Irv sampled the little glass of Boone’s Farm that Bruce and Bunny had brought to test her dad’s palate – Irv about spit it out! You can tell by the look on our faces how much the beach elders enjoyed each other’s company! I looked back and thought, hmmm….. the ABC’s of Hayward’s Bay – Artes, Bauske, Creasey and it’s a blessing that our children have found a way to make Okoboji an important part of their lives. Of course, we’ve endured sadness over the years: Irv passing so young and not even having a chance to see the new Creasey cottage, the sad, sad saga of Bob and Grace and their children and now the passing of the Matriarch of the beach and the heir to the Edmonds legacy – Mabel Artes. I’ve heard some say that death is just a part of life and as son Bob has written above Mabel led a good, long, and fairly healthy life surrounded by love and blessed to see one grandchild so I don’t grieve Mabel. I celebrate her life!

Condolences to the Irving and Mabel Artes family!

What a terrible time of year for this to happen, although when you consider the inevitability of death and the peaceful way Mabel passed and at age 92 we can't really feel sorry for her - but that thought won't ease the pain of her passing for our friends.
All blessings,
Bob Creasey
